Now You Know by Anais Mitchell, which I stumbled on today, is SUCH a middle age song. It sounds like someone in perimenopause. It's not hitting me personally head on (among other things I don't think about children that way) but I found it gripping and beautiful.

[Fic] 2 Baker Street 2 Papas

Back in 2016, I had just published what I believed would be my magnum opus, that massively multi-Holmes vid, Something Good Would Come From That. From the depths of my emotional crash afterwards, I strongly suspected I would never make anything else good again. To console myself, I wrote an id-fic for [personal profile] language_escapes' birthday: kid fic for an obscure Holmes and Watson adaptation. It was just for the two of us; no one else would ever care.

To my everlasting shock, it proved wildly popular.

During the next year or two, I noodled with other stories in the same 'verse, even writing a good 4-5K on one of them, but alas, I drifted out of Holmes fandom before finishing any of them.

But now I seem to be drifting Holmes-ward again? Or anyway, I've been pulling out old Holmesian WIPs and finishing them off.

Which is the long way of saying: here, have a sequel to Baker Street Papas!

Five Times They Didn’t Share A Bed, and One Time They Did

Sherlock Holmes & Doctor Watson (1980 Whitehead & Pickering)

Holmes/Watson, Mycroft

5+1 Things, Developing Relationship, Injury Recovery, Kid Fic, Only One Bed

Part 2 of Baker Street Papas

Mature; No Warnings Apply

To kiss a man in the heat of the moment is one thing. To cold-bloodedly change the entire basis of your relationship is another.

Holmes' wound festers. Watson blames himself.

Around 9K total, and I'll be posting updates daily through the end of the week. Only a short update today, but I figure at least some may want to re-read the original, so that's all right.

I hope you enjoy!

Nominations Guidelines - Spring 2026

Nominations are now open for the Spring 2026 round of Seasons of Drabbles! Nominations will remain open until signups close on Sunday, April 12 @ 11:59pm Eastern Daylight time (Countdown).

Important Reminders
  • All character nominations should be disambiguated, for example: Steve Rogers (Captain America (Movies)). Not doing this slows the approval process significantly, so please disambiguate! Characters may be nominated in any/every fandom in which they appear.

  • We will not approve broad writer's-choice character nominations (e.g., "Creator's Choice of Demon" or "Any Star Trek Captain"). This is because it requires the mods to have fandom-specific knowledge when checking that gifts are for a requested character during approvals. Instead, please nominate specific characters.

For example, we would not approve "Creator's Choice of Jedi" under Star Wars because it'd require the mods to know/find out which individual characters in a gift are Jedi or not. Instead, we'd ask you to nominate specific Jedi characters. The only fandoms where such broad nominations are permitted are the "Creator's Choice" fandoms (e.g., "Female Character"), since by their nature, character nominations cannot be specific.

General Guidelines
  • You may nominate up to 10 fandoms with up to 10 characters each.

  • Both umbrella fandoms and sub-fandoms are allowed. For instance, you may nominate under Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars - All Media Types. You may also nominate under sub-fandoms such as Thor (Movies) or Star Wars Original Trilogy.

Please remember that if you request Any for an umbrella fandom, you will be requesting any character who appears in any of the fandoms below the umbrella - NOT just characters in the tagset. So if you plan to request Any, you may want to request under a specific sub-fandom rather than the umbrella.

  • RPF is allowed. Nominated RPF characters must be famous in their own right, and must be 18+ for modern RPF.

  • Crossovers are allowed. Crossover fandoms should be nominated as Fandom A/Fandom B. Character nominations for crossovers should be nominated as Character's Name (Fandom A/Fandom B). For example, if nominating Luke Skywalker for a Narnia/Star Wars crossover, the fandom would be nominated as Chronicles of Narnia/Star Wars, while the character would be nominated as Luke Skywalker (Narnia/Star Wars).

  • Recursive fandoms are allowed. The required format is Recursive: Fic/Series title - Creator. Recursive fandoms may be nominated under two circumstances: 1. the creator has posted a blanket permission statement, 2. you are the creator. In either case, please contact us when nominating so that we have the pertinent permissions. Characters nominated under recursive fandoms should be disambiguated with the title of the recursive fandom.

  • Since we will be re-using the tagset all year, recursive fandoms will be removed on an as-needed basis between rounds (only if a blanket permission statement comes down, or the creator asks for it to be removed).

  • Original Works are allowed. When nominating characters, please disambiguate with (Original Work). If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination. An example nomination: Original Nonbinary Character (Original Work)

  • Original characters may also be nominated in existing fandoms. When nominating an original character within an existing fandom, please disambiguate with the name of the fandom. If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination. An example nomination: Original Anbu Character (Naruto)

  • Objects/concepts/etc. may be nominated in the character slot for any canon in which they appear. For Original Works, you can make some up if you would like. Some example nominations: Cursed Hat (What We Do in the Shadows (TV)), Magic Mirror (Original Work)

Need to contact us or have a question? See the Mod Contact post!

New rule as of March 2026: Crossovers do not count towards the minimum of 3 fandoms per sign-up if they contain a fandom you're already requesting/offering. For instance, if you're requesting Fandom A and Fandom B, a Fandom A/Fandom C crossover would not count towards the minimum of 3. At the end of the round, we'll assess this new rule/ask for your feedback and decide whether to keep/tweak/toss it.

The full Guidelines are below and we strongly encourage you to read them! Here are some quick notes, though:
  • First time doing a fic exchange? Welcome! Fanlore has some helpful explanations about how AO3 exchanges work and general exchange etiquette. Don't be afraid to ask a question if something's confusing.
  • Here, "drabble" does not just mean a short fic, but a specific wordcount. In addition to single drabbles (fics of exactly 100 words), we accept double drabbles (200 words) and triple drabbles (300 words). We also accept drabble series/sequences.
  • When you sign up, you cannot exclude single drabbles from your offers or requests. You are still welcome to request or offer the other drabble types, you just can't leave 100-word drabbles out entirely from your signup. See below for more details about this recent rule change.
  • Participants must be 18+.
  • Don't use generative AI for your gifts.

...on the back he saw a neat little résumé in Miss Pembroke’s handwriting, intended for such as him. “Allegory. Man = modern civilization (in bad sense). Girl = getting into touch with Nature.”
The Longest Journey, chapter 12

Pan Pipes The Celestial Omnibus and Other Stories (1911) is a collection of various of E. M. Forster's short stories originally published in magazines over the previous decade or so; it is dedicated to The Independent Review, one of those magazines and evidently an Apostles/Bloomsbury project, which had ceased publication some time previously. The stories are a delight and I enjoyed them very much, but I fear an attempt to explain why risks falling into the triteness quoted above, or else perhaps the other, at least more entertaining, way of getting things right-but-wrong (or wrong-but-right) of Charles Sayle's view on 'The Story of a Panic', described by Forster in the essay 'My Books and I':
Then he showed Maynard what the story was about. B—— by a waiter at the hotel, Eustace commits bestiality with a goat on that valley where I had sat. In the subsequent chapters, he tells the waiter how nice it has been and they try to b—— each other again. [...] I was horrified and did not want to meet Charles Sayle. In after years I realised that in a stupid and unprofitable way he was right and that this was the cause of my indignation.

What shall I say about them, then? The stories, which may or may not be variously about Nature and b——y, are all more or less fantastical. The title story is meant very literally; it's about an omnibus that goes to Heaven (from Surbiton), and the bus is driven and Heaven peopled by famous authors and literary characters from through the ages. 'The Story of a Panic', 'The Road from Colonus' and 'The Curate's Friend' all feature classical themes; the first two are set in Italy and Greece respectively, while the Faun of the latter, haunting the hills of (of course) Wiltshire and usually 'only speaking to children' who forget him when they grow up, reminded me for a moment of Kipling's Puck, though Forster does more adult things with him. 'The Other Side of the Hedge' is also about Modern Civilisation and what it loses sight of, and is really more of an allegory than 'Other Kingdom', despite Agnes Pembroke's comment on the latter—for, what delighted me most of all in this collection, that story is (with a few minor alterations of detail) Rickie's story about the Dryad described in chapters 7 and 12 of The Longest Journey. Apparently Forster had written but not yet published it when he put it in the novel. Important and highly recommended reading for any Forster fan and anyone else who thinks this sort of thing sounds worthwhile.

Is there a retelling of Sleeping Beauty (the general plotline, not the ballet specifically) in any media that deals with the whole castle being asleep for a hundred years?

Like, I assume that A Castle is a significant economic unit, and having it fuck off behind a hedge for five generations, and then pop back into life has some effects on the surrounding countryside? (I guess in the ballet they put the whole kingdom to sleep? WHICH I ALSO HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT!)

Like your daughter is a maid in the castle, then poof! behind a hedge! But then she's back to meet her great grand nieces?

What if you had a financial relationship with the castle?

What if the neighbouring duke or whatever wanted your land? I assume he'd just take it, at that point, but then poof! the castle's back?

But also, the fey showing up and doing things seems to be normal and expected in this universe, so maybe people are just used to it, and have contingency plans for people stuck sleeping behind a hedge for five generations?

Anyway, is there like a novel that deals with this? If not Sleeping Beauty directly, then something similar, where it's a whole bunch of people forming a significant political and economic unit essentially yeeted out of time for a hundred years?

(Hard no on anything that involves the rapey version of Sleeping Beauty.)

Life has been very busy and I am behind on posting all the things, but this morning I had a few free hours. I spent it writing fic.

Edmond Dantès/Abbé Faria
Imprisonment, Canon Compliant, Making the Subtext Text, No Betas We Die Like Abbé Faria
Major Character death, 1300 words

Dantès swore that nothing but death would part them. Nothing but death did. Scenes from a sort of marriage.

The last couple of weeks, I've been reading The Count of Monte Cristo with [tumblr.com profile] monte-cristo-daily. We're only just past the Château d'If, so please don't spoil me, I know nothing. (Right now Dantès is buying everyone boats: I heartily approve!)

But from the moment Abbé Faria was introduced, I shipped it. Alas, when I turned to AO3, I discovered this was a "when not even the sickos on AO3 have your back" kind of moment. So I fixed that. ;-)

Inaugural post for the 'ship, hooray!
